Waxing Crescent Moon Phase (first phase after a new moon)

We're just starting out on our homesteading journey with our new home and we had to tackle some projects pretty early on.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle

Our 1st projects were to replace the toilet seats because they were broken and loose and one was plastic. By me, I mean my handyman-in-the-making husband, of course. I tried to replace one and somehow managed to get clean water on the floor, so I let him replace that one too. We have kept the old ones for later Freecycle post as they can't be recycled.

Rain, rain, go away
We also hired a gutter guy to install aluminum seamless gutters that match our house colors to protect the foundation and prep for....rain water collection! This is a project for another day, but I'm looking forward to getting free water for my future garden. The rain barrels aren't cheap, so we will have to wait, unless a fabulous reader happens to have wooden barrels they would love to donate to a family of 3 1/2 to support their homestead? ;)

We also replaced the laundry bathroom windows for better energy efficiency, but we'll need better insulation to actually achieve comfort in that part of the house. My husband also installed a dual flush system in the back of one of our toilets which was leaky anyway.

BYO & Glass, Check Please!

For our first phase of becoming more zero waste/sustainable is to:

1. buy local milk delivered in glass bottles,
2. make homemade bread and refuse packaged
3. bring our own glass water jugs,
4. glass jars vs takeout containers, and
5. reusable utensils versus plastic disposables when we're out.

Homestead, homestead in the Basement

We just bought 7 baby quail, 5 hens and 2 roosters, and can expect eggs anywhere from 2-4 weeks from now. We also set up our worm compost bin and outdoor compost bin for everything we can't feed the worms.
