This is one of our peaceful pockets ideas, which are easy earth-friendly ways to save money. Having a baby? Then you need to know about a cheap and natural solution to skip the Tylenol. This solution is plastic free and will make your first few days postpartum feel luxurious. I used this trick after my 2nd birth, I would never go back to "the bottle" again. It was so much more effective! Read on find out how you can feel luxurious too with DIY cloth "padsicles".
Why skip the Tylenol?
Though I fully support using our modern healthcare system when needed, I don't see a need to medicate every aspect of daily living. Pain is mental. You can reduce pain intensity by controlling your thoughts.
That being said, just using Tylenol once in a child's first year, increases their risk of getting asthma by 60%. If you get it to your child once a month, they're risk increases by 540%. My discomfort after having a baby is not worth risking the chance that they will have life-long health problems.
The Alternative to Tylenol?
Does this mean I think mothers should just "take one for the team"? Of course not! I had two births, my 1st one with Tylenol (I didn't know any better.) and adult diapers (this was horrid, don't do it!) and my 2nd one with the alternative.
You know what? The alternative made me feel better and actually helped me heal, and not just dull the pain.
So...What is it?
What is this miracle cure? Padsicles! I used homemade, plastic-free reusable postpartum pads that I can use for multiple births and I froze them with an herbal remedy to help things heal.
Whenever I got uncomfortable, I just changed one and Bam!, I was pain-free again. I didn't have to worry about any side effects for me or my baby. Plus, I saved money by using the pads I would have needed anyway. Herbs are pretty cheap, y'all.
How to make plastic-free "padsicles" for maximum postpartum discomfort relief and healing
Tools for making padsicles
- postpartum pads (add the cloth ones to your registry, make your own like I did, or buy them yourself, they are worth it.)
- postpartum sitz bath herbs (You can also use these in sitz baths for postpartum healing.)
- a container to soak the herbs
- a large freezer-safe container to curve the pads
- a pot,
- a spoon
How to Make the Padsicles
Lay Postpartum Sitz Bath herbs in a tea ball/tied cloth bag in a container (I bought these postpartum tea bags on sale at a health foods store, before I knew about the cheaper loose herbs.). Cover with boiling water, enough to dribble over the number of pads wanted. Steep for 5 minutes.
Dribble liquid onto a pad with a spoon.
Layer pads on their side, in a large container to curve, then freeze, while keeping them curved.
When frozen, pop padsicles into a container to keep clean. To avoid adherence to tender areas, work the pad in hands a bit before placing between two absorbing pads layers on the shield in undies.
