Save over $500 a Year on Water Bottles

Why Switch to a Reusable Water Bottle

Why a reusable water bottle is worth it

Switching from disposable water bottles to a reusable water bottle can save you $500 or more a year per person! You won't have to worry about accidentally using someone else's backwashed disposable bottle. You will have a much better-looking water bottle that can keep water hot or cold.

Cost of a reusable water bottle

Cost of Bottled Water

One disposable water bottle costs an average of $1.50 each for 16 oz of tap water. That's $0.13 an oz vs. less than $0.01 per oz. Most bottled water is tap water. The plastic-free reusable water bottle that  1/2 of my family uses, holds 32 oz of tap water and costs $28. The smaller 16 oz water bottle with a straw my husband uses costs $18.45. In either bottle, you can keep hot or cold liquids their proper temperature for hours, so it's also a thermos!

How a Water Bottle can save you money

If you buy just one bottle of water a day, you're spending $547.5 a year for water per person. If you buy the plastic-free bottle, you'll start saving money after filling up your bottle less than 10 times. If you buy the bottle with the straw, you'll start saving money after filling up your bottle 13 times.

Either way, you'll be saving $528-$532.5 your first year assuming you only use 1 bottle a day. You'll save $547.50 a year every year after that. If you buy the number of bottles closer to the recommended amount of water intake for your weight and activity level, you will save so much more.

Reusable Water Bottles Are Nicer

UpgradeYourWaterBottle

Reusable water bottles just look prettier than a plastic disposable water bottle. You can pick out different colors or styles that are more unique to you. You can even accessorize your water bottle by using tying on colorful yarn, using a colorful carabiner, or making a water bottle holder out of upcycled jeans.

Reusable water bottles are more durable as well. If you use a nice stainless steel bottle, which also avoids hormone disrupters, then you don't have to worry about breaking it.

You have your own/know which one is yours

Reusable Water Bottles are more unique

Another advantage of a reusable water bottle is that it can be unique to you.  Disposables all look the same, so you're more likely to get backwash when you have more than one water bottle out. You have probably grabbed someone else's water bottle at a party, and may not even know how gross that experience was.

A reusable water bottle can save a family of four over $2000 a year, or over $500 per person. Your reusable water bottle is a lot nicer and you don't have to worry about grabbing someone else's water by mistake.

How to Start Saving over $500 a year per person

How to Save on Water

  • Get a reusable water bottle for each member of your family

  • (Optional) Accessorize water bottles so they will get more use

  • Stop buying bottled water

That's Why a Reusable Water Bottle is Worth it For You

Ultimately, ditching disposable water bottles will save you money and keep your water and other beverages the perfect temperature. You won't get water bottles mixed up with other people's. Your water will look nicer and be more unique to you.

  2. Visiting from A Fireman's Wife. For me it isn't so much saving the planet as less trash I have to take care of that compels me to use a reusable water bottle.

  3. Callen, thanks for pointing that out. You have a lot less trash and recycling to haul when you use reusables, that's for sure!

  6. Very valuable post! We always try to use our reusable bottles, especially in the summer when we go through more water. And now straws are on my list as well. Have been trying really hard to remember to reject them at restaurants, etc.
