Want to start seeds for free? Now you can!

start seeds for free

We talked about how make a free newspaper pot and how to get seeds for free. Now that you have the pot, you need to know how to use it. Here is how to start seeds for free:

Note: When planting more than one type of plant, be sure to place plants in the same water catchers that you will plant at the same time. Peppers, tomatoes, and loofahs are all planted after the last frost date here in Utah, so they are good to be placed in the same baking pan together.

How to start seeds for free

1.Get some compost and fill the pot 3/4 of the way full.

fill seed pot with soil

2. Place each pot in something that will catch the extra water. We use baking pans and reuse "disposable" baking pans or anything else that we have lying around that doesn't have holes.

4. As you plant, write the name of the plant on the outside of the pot, facing outward. If planting multiple varieties, write the variety on the pot as well.

write name of seed on pot5. Water thoroughly and water as the dirt dries, unless the plant requires the dirt to stay moist.

There you have it! How to start your free seeds in your free pot!

  4. I have saved seeds from quite a few plants. The most successful for me are snow peas. They have always grown true and produce well. - Margy

  5. Great ideas! We just planted some tomato seeds and I'm hopeful that we might actually get tomatoes this year (I'm not very good at this growing food thing!). Thanks for sharing with us at Love to Learn. Pinned.

  8. Awesome! I'm great at starting seeds, and I might get my plants in the ground. I usually fail when it comes to maintaining hand watered plants, and all of my gardens have been hand watered so far. I may only succeed once I've fully implemented an automated watering system.
