I bet you didn't know that that pocket breath spray you spend a couple of dollars on is costing you over $170 a year! When I was looking at less packaged and more natural ways to save money, I checked the price of breath freshening spray. But I didn't just check for the smallest price tag, I checked cost per oz.
You said breath spray is how much!?
The result was startling. Did you know that Listerine Cool Mint Breath Freshening Spray costs $12.00 an oz? This is the cheapest kind I found. Since they only come in 0.6 oz containers, if you use two Listerine sprays a month, you spend over $172.8 a year on a few minutes of decent smelling breath!
How much is the natural homemade version?
I looked up homemade all-natural breath freshening spray recipes and calculated the cost. Adapting minimally from this recipe, I found out how much essential oils cost per drop, and how much honey cost per tsp. It was so much cheaper, 1.67% of the store-bought version.
Cost breakdown
Wintergreen oil $.75 for 15 drops)+Honey $0.03 per 1/2 tsp=$0.20 an oz
Homemade at $0.20 an oz x 14.4 oz (12 months worth)=$2.88 per year
Here is my slight adaptation to the recipe linked above with Wintergreen essential oil. Wintergreen is my top favorite flavors.:
Natural Breath Freshening Spray
Ingredients
- Dark Glass spray bottles or value-pack for diy home cleaners, sprays, and essential oil application
- 15 drops of Wintergreen essential oil
- 1/2 tsp of honey
- 4 oz water
Directions
Pour water into small bowl and mix honey in until it dissolves. Mix in wintergreen oil. Pour breath freshening spray into two dark glass 2oz spray bottles. Replace caps and keep your breath fresh with wild abandon.
How much could you save on fresh breath per year?
If you replace Listerine spray at $12 an oz x 14.4 oz (12 months worth)=$172.80 per year.
If you use homemade, which is $0.20 an oz x 14.4 oz (12 months worth)=$2.88 per year total cost.
You can save $172.8-$2.88=169.92 annually on breath freshening spray, by switching to a natural alternative.
Save mega-money by doing it yourself
By creating your own natural breath freshening spray, you can save big on breath freshening spray. In fact, you can save over $160 a year! How do you save fresh breath? Be sure to share this post so more people can find eco-friendly ways to save money!
