Do your mattresses ever get stains, or simply lose their luster? Since one of the best ways to save money is to maintain your things (so you don't replace before you need to), keep your mattresses clean with the first two solutions, and keep them lasting longer with the other two solutions.

If you would like a printable version of how to maintain your mattress, read through to the bottom of the post to get access to our free resource library.

The first solution is for stain removal, and stains often happen with pets, children, postpartum recovery, illness, or other parts of life. The second solution is for monthly maintenance to keep dust mites at bay and keep your mattress smelling and looking tidy. Both are simple, cheap, and natural.

The third solution is to use a waterproof mattress encasement to keep allergens, bed bugs, and stains at bay. The fourth solution is to rotate the mattress 180 degrees from head to foot every six months.

Cost breakdown

Mattress Stain remover=$0.24 per use. Monthly Maintenance Powder=$0.92  per month. The yearly total for using the monthly maintenance powder is $11.04.

However, it is important to remember, that by keeping your mattress clean and fresh, you are less likely to replace it before it has served it's full 7-10 years of use. It also means you'll be able to recycle your mattress with pride when the time comes.

Mattress and More Stain Removal

Good for removing urine or other stains from mattresses, clothing, carpet, upholstery, and just about anything else that you may need.

Get urine, blood, and more out

You will need to mix these ingredients together:

1  Cup 3% hydrogen peroxide ($0.08)
1/4 cup homemade dish soap ($0.11)

3 tablespoons of baking soda (less than $0.05)

Pouring mattress stain remover into a spray bottle.

Mix them and then pour into the spray bottle once the foaming from adding baking soda has receded. Using the mixture is really easy. You just have to spray the area that needs to be treated and let it sit for about an hour or so, or until dry.

You may want to ventilate the room or turn a fan on so that any smells you're trying to remove don’t get to you. When you come back, your stains should be completely gone and the best part is that they will take the smell with them.

When your mattress is dry, either vacuum or brush any remaining baking soda off of the mattress. Enjoy your fresh clean mattress!

For monthly mattress and carpet cleaning/deodorizing

Deodorizer Ingredients

Ingredients:

1 cup baking soda ($0.56)
4 drops of lavender essential oil ($0.36)

Directions:

Add the Lavender Essential Oil

When you have a sunny and dry day: Combine the baking soda and essential oils in a bowl.

Mix the lavender oil in

Mix well to distribute the oils into the baking soda. (I just use my bare hand since lavender is safe topically. Strip and wash your bedding. Toss them into your washer on the hottest setting to kill dust mites and other allergens.

Transfer into a shaker jar

Transfer your cleaning powder to a jar with a shaker lid, or just grab a sifter or sieve from your kitchen.

Shake the deodorizer all over the mattress

Shake or sift the powder over the surface of your mattress or carpet. (A quick note – one batch of the cleaning powder just covered my queen-size mattress, so you may want to double the recipe if you have a large bed or room of carpet to clean.)

Let it sit for at least one hour. Let the sunlight in for airing out the bed for several hours. The baking soda and oils will draw out moisture, odor, and dirt and leave your mattress or carpet nice and clean.

Slowly vacuum or carpet sweep (carpet only) the powder off your mattress or carpet. (You want to work slowly here so that the vacuum is using maximum suction to pull out as much dirt as possible.) You could also brush off the powder into a dustpan on the side of the mattress. (This is what we do as we use a robotic vacuum and carpet sweeper for our carpets.)

Repeat the process once a month for a cleaner, more hygienic mattress or fresher carpet.

That's all you need to do for keeping your mattresses, carpet, and more clean and fresh. Hopefully, this ends up saving you money, by helping you maintain your mattress so you don't buy a mattress before you need to. Let us all recycle our mattresses with pride at the end of their lifespan! The goal would be to also help you keep your other furniture/carpet nice and fresh.
