- 5 teaspoons washing soda (NOT baking soda) $0.12
- 3 TB vegetable glycerin (less than an oz) $0.60
- 15 drops lemon essential oil (for help with cutting through grease) $0.60
- 10 cups water
Directions
1. Use a cheese grater to grate the soap.
2. Heat water in a pot and add shredded soap. Once the soap has melted, remove from heat.
3. Stir in washing soda and glycerin until dissolved.
4. Cover and set mixture aside for several hours or overnight.
5. If your soap becomes too solid, blend it with a hand blender or in a blender. It will liquefy in seconds.
6. Add essential oil and stir until combined.
7. Transfer dish soap to containers.
If you like saving money on dish soap, perhaps you'd enjoy saving money on glass cleaner as well.

Visiting from the Hearth and Soul Link Party! I think this recipe is rather neat, and haven't come across it until now. May I ask how you store the extra dish soap? Or do you have dispensers to hold all 10 cups? My husband and I are at odds with what to use to clean dishes. He is a Dawn obsessed person; while I want a more natural option. Currently we have Dawn and Mrs. Meyers in our kitchen, but I would love to make my own and save some money in the process.
ReplyDeleteHi Erin! Thanks for stopping by. I store the extra dish soap in two quart-size mason jars because that's what I have on hand. I can understand the dish soap tension. We have a similar tension with homemade natural toothpaste. My kids have never used store-bought toothpaste and I use a homemade option I love as well.
ReplyDeleteMr. Greenie continues to use his cheap stuff though and doesn't seem interested in switching anytime soon. I will say that the homemade stuff is more expensive than his storebought though, so that is one area where health beats frugality for me but doesn't for him. He's kindly switched to natural options in every area I can think of, so I take the toothpaste as a minor loss in an all-natural lifestyle.
That is how it is with our (his) junk drawer. He is a pretty tidy guy, except for thinking he needs a junk drawer. But as long as I don't see it on a counter top, I can live with it.
ReplyDeleteWhen we downsized, he didn't want to declutter, so a big box of clothes got put up in our loft with the Christmas decor. One day, he purged his socks and needed new ones. I reminded him of the big box of clothes he had. When he finished sorting through everything, he kept the socks and maybe 10% of the rest. He was so excited, but for some reason he doesn't get it when it comes to that silly drawer. Oh well! We win some and lose others.
